Throughout my career, I have seen people struggle to talk confidently about their achievements and contributions to business successes. I struggled with this at various points in my journey as well. It's a given that being visible and heard in the workplace is crucial. It's also given that in the world of hybrid or fully remote work, being seen and heard can be even more challenging. While we aspire for our contributions to be acknowledged, the reality often requires intentional effort, especially for individual contributors. Crafting an impactful message, and delivery of that message, takes work and refinement. Here are a few things to consider:
Strike the right balance when showcasing your achievements; avoid appearing boastful or overly passive.
Articulate your contributions without coming across as self-promoting.
If discussing your accomplishments proves challenging, enlist others to help amplify your positive impact within the organization.
Acknowledge your team's role in your achievements, even when working individually. Recognize the collective effort that supports individual contributions.
Tailor your message to your audience; be mindful of providing the appropriate level of detail, as too much can overshadow your accomplishments, particularly with a senior audience.
Seek feedback after sharing your successes and refine your approach for future opportunities to showcase your wins.
If you work remotely and most of your interactions happen with your leaders, boss and peers on video calls, whenever possible, be on camera, look engaged, and participate in the discussions. While it may be more challenging to been seen on a video call, it's not impossible!
Being seen and heard at work is a skill to be cultivated. Practice with trusted colleagues in low-stakes situations to build confidence and develop a communication style that feels authentic. You're making significant contributions – ensure they are not just made, but also seen and heard!
